The world heritage of the ecuatorian city of Cuenca, will have a TELTRONIC TETRA solution

The communication solution for the main tramway line of Cuenca will be based on TETRA technology to provide a quality and safety operation.

Cuenca-Ecuador February 2015. Cuenca, Ecuador. The Cuenca tramway, called “Los Cuatro Ríos de Cuenca” tramway, will be the largest public transport system in the city. It will have about 39 million passengers per year facilitating the integration with other transport media as well as regularity of journeys and decreasing travel times.

The new main tramway line from North to South, and complemented with a set of feeder routes, will help to improve the mobility of citizens and the safety of the mass transit network in the city.

It is essential to have a robust and resilient wireless communications system to get the proper performance of this new architecture design. For that purpose, TELTRONIC will deliver a system composed of TETRA NEBULA infrastructure and on-board equipment for the trams. The system will be able to handle simultaneously the voice services for the tramways and network staff, and the data ones to support the needs of the traffic control and regulation.

The TETRA communication system is integrated with the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) application from the French company INEO, in the on-board part, as well as in the control center, where the traffic control and regulation application (AVLS) will be installed. This application will have line connection to the radio system and its TETRA services through the interface and N2A protocol provided by the NEBULA infrastructure.

In particular, it does worth to highlight the special installation required for one of the radio base stations, which is delivered within an outdoor cabinet ready to support extreme environmental conditions.

“The commitment of TELTRONIC in this type of transport projects is to design the best and optimum communication solution that guarantees a perfect integration with the rest of companies involved in the Project, as they are in this case, the applicator of the ITS system (AVLS) and the Rolling stock manufacturer”, says Felipe Sanjuán, TELTRONIC Sales Vice-President in charge of the integration solutions of this project in Ecuador.

The new TELTRONIC digital TETRA communications system will be a step forward the improvement of the current public transport system in Ecuador, and sums up a new case to the wide experience of TELTRONIC in professional communication projects for tramway environments.

About TETRA

TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) is an open standard defined by the European Institute of Standardization (ETSI). The main target of the TETRA standard is to define a set of interfaces, services and functionalities to cover the needs of the traditional PMR professional users, making easy the interoperability between the products designed by all the vendors. TETRA technology defines a digital radio system with privacy and confidentiality, better audio quality and improvements in the data transmission capacity
