PASTO MUNICIPALITY, COLOMBIA
San Juan de Pasto, known as Pasto, is the capital of the department of Nariño, located in southern Colombia.
With around 500,000 inhabitants, Pasto is one of the oldest cities of Colombia, and is located on the Andes cordillera, at the foot of the Galeras volcano.
Pasto was one of Colombia cities that did not have a centralized public transportation system to regulate the movement of people in the city. However, now Pasto is the first to be benefitted from a nationwide project to develop integrated public transportation systems for twelve of Colombia’s large cities.
This nationwide project looks for the real-time management of the buses operation, the verification of routes, frequencies and schedules, the definition of bus stops and, over all, continuous communications between drivers and Control Centre operators.
For that, AVANTE SETP, the organisation tasked with planning and implementing the new transportation system, required the supply, installation and commissioning of a fleet control and management system for Pasto municipality.
The Korean integrator LG CNS was awarded with this project and they relied on Teltronic to provide the digital communication system based on the TETRA standard.
Teltronic supplied, installed and commissioned a complete TETRA system for the public transport network.
The solution – comprising Nebula TETRA infrastructure and over 550 mobile and portable radios – forms part of a cutting-edge, network-wide fleet control and management system provided by LG and designed to optimise service and reduce traveling and waiting times.
In addition to managing communication between all staff on the network, this solution provides real-time information which, in conjunction with the Intelligent Transportation System, allows the redeployment of resources to minimise delays, as well as providing up-to-date passenger information via the Passenger Information System as was expected by the end user.
Location, alarms and events of each vehicle are sent to the Control Centre via the Teltronic’s Synchronous Data Manager (SDM). An application that uses TETRA SDS (Short Data Service) messages allowing minimal refresh times and helping to avoid network saturation.
This application is responsible for polling the terminals to obtain the latest information in near-real time, and can obtain the position of every bus in AVANTE’s fleet in a few seconds.
- Real-time operational control
- Continuous communications between drivers and Control Centre
- TETRA technology advantages:
- Private communication system fully controlled and maintained by the end user
- Simultaneous voice, data and location services over a single network
- Large coverage ranges
- Third parties integration
- Lifecycle of professional equipment
All these benefits will achieve the relief of traffic congestion and the improvement the city’s transport situation.
“Teltronic has been selected in 6 out of 8 TETRA projects deployed in Colombia, being the leader in the supply of TETRA systems in the country”, said Jairo Gómez, Sales responsible of Teltronic Andina.
